Game two of the series between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders is on Monday, with the Canes taking the opening game 3-1 on Saturday. That would have been especially pleasing for the home team as the Isles won both meetings at PNC Arena during the regular season. They took advantage of an early powerplay to take the lead but allowed the Isles to dominate the middle frame before coming back strongly to close it out. Their final goal was an empty net tally to extend the scoreline a little but they were deserved winners. The seventh-best offense and fourth-best defense in the regular season, there are few holes in the franchise with Frederik Andersen back between the pipes with a huge performance. He stopped 33 of 34 shots in game one to help the Canes to victory.
New York will feel slightly aggrieved that they got nothing out of the game having dominated the middle frame. They simply struggled to beat Andersen despite carving out more opportunities. They had scored 10 times on 44 shots against Pyotr Kochetkov in their two prior trips to Raleigh this season but found Andersen an entirely different proposition. They were only just above .500 on the road this season so there are not many who would have expected them to take much out of the first two games of the series but heading back to New York with an 0-2 deficit would ask an awful lot of them. To level the series, they need to find some goals from the likes of Bo Horvat, who has not scored in five straight and Mathew Barzal, who is now up to 10 games without scoring.
