In this cross-conference MLS battle, both New York City FC and the Seattle Sounders come into Decision Day with solid positions – each currently sits 5th in their respective conference – but with incentive to improve their playoff seeding. New York City FC (NYCFC) have had a strong 2025 season, one that could end as their second-best ever in terms of points if they secure a win here. The one blip at Citi Field was a heavy 0-4 loss to Inter Miami last month, but that aside, New York typically enjoys a strong home-field advantage.
Just before this match, NYCFC did lose 1-0 away to the Philadelphia Union, a narrow defeat to the Supporters' Shield winners, which snapped a short winning streak. Nevertheless, NYCFC remain a tough side to beat, and they are unbeaten in their last three home meetings against Seattle. With a chance to potentially move up to 4th (which would grant them home-field in the first playoff round) if results go their way, NYCFC will be highly motivated.
Seattle, meanwhile, had an up-and-down season but appear to be regaining form at the perfect time. The Sounders, Western Conference royalty, experienced a “blip” in late summer, including a four-match winless run in domestic play after winning the Leagues Cup in August. However, as the regular season winds down, Seattle have picked up back-to-back 1-0 victories (most recently defeating Real Salt Lake 1-0). Those wins have secured their playoff place and stabilized their campaign.

New York City's resurgence this year has been driven by a mix of new faces and veteran leadership. One standout is Alonso Martínez, a Costa Rican forward who has been a revelation in attack. Martínez has delivered clutch performances throughout the season – he's even earned MLS Player of the Matchday honors and scored a Goal of the Matchday back in March, underlining his impact.
The Sounders have their own arsenal of key players, starting with Danny Musovski up front. Musovski has been Seattle's leading scorer with 14 goals – a career-best tally for him – making him one of the league's more prolific strikers this season. His emergence has eased the burden on long-time star Raúl Ruidíaz and given Seattle a reliable finisher.
