A new Leagues Cup begins, a popular competition that merges all of Liga MX with MLS, in a tournament to be played over the course of a month. The first two champions were Mexican, but the last three were from MLS. At Yankee Stadium, New York City will play against Puebla of Liga MX on Tuesday. In the previous edition, Puebla lost its matches in a group consisting of Tigres and Inter Miami, and New York City advanced until being eliminated by Columbus Crew, the eventual champion, in the quarterfinals.
The Pigeons come into Tuesday's match in good form, led by their Costa Rican striker Alonso Martínez, who scored two second-half goals to come from behind against FC Dallas in Texas. It was a thrilling match that New York City won 3-4. With this, and having one game in hand, New York City moved five points clear of their crosstown rival, the New York Red Bulls, in the MLS standings. They're focusing more on direct qualification for the MLS playoffs.
The playoffs, but in Liga MX, are a stage Puebla typically misses. Liga MX's new Apertura tournament kicked off on July 11th, and Puebla had a start to the season that saw them avoid playing against Mexican heavyweights and still lost to Atlas and Mazatlán, but they earned three points in the nick of time against Santos Laguna before heading to New York.
