The NFL has decided to open the 2026/2027 season with the best possible matchup: an immediate rematch of the last Super Bowl between the Seahawks and the Patriots, this time at Lumen Field. Seattle won that Super Bowl 29–13, thanks to five field goals from Jake Myers. It was a final that ultimately lacked the expected parity. Heading into this season, both teams have seen significant roster changes—arrivals and departures—yet both remain strong contenders to win it all.
The Seahawks finished the previous season with a 14–3 record and a championship title; for this season, they have retained most of their core, including reliable quarterback Sam Darnold. However, there have been two major departures: Klint Kubat left to coach the Raiders and was replaced by Fleury, while Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III left for the Chiefs. Nevertheless, there are high expectations for his replacement, Jadarian Price; despite having no prior NFL experience and missing the preseason, he is projected as a likely Rookie of the Year candidate.
The Patriots also finished the previous season with a 14–3 record, riding an impressive 10-game winning streak. Drake Maye appears to be a worthy successor to Tom Brady, though the offensive line will need to step up and give him more time than they did during the Super Bowl.
