Although Atlante didn't do enough to earn a return to Liga MX last season in the expansion league, a league that already lacked promotion, a series of administrative moves and Mazatlán's withdrawal have allowed the beloved Mexico City club to return to the top flight after a 15-year absence. The World Cup is over, but the Liga MX season kicks off with a match steeped in nearly 100 years of history between Necaxa and Atlante.
Necaxa finished twelfth in the previous Clausura tournament, outside the playoff positions with only 18 points and a goal difference of -4. The Aguascalientes-based team will make their debut at Estadio Victoria after playing three friendly matches; they defeated Atlético Morelia, thrashed Correcaminos, and drew 0-0 against Atlas.
For its part, this Atlante team will not only be based in the colossal Azteca Stadium, recently renovated for the World Cup, but will also have a legendary manager: Miguel "El Piojo" Herrera, who said his goal is to qualify for the playoffs and restore the name of the traditional Mexico City team to its former glory.
