The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Cincinnati Bearcats will get their 2025 college football seasons underway Thursday, Aug. 28, when they face off on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
For the first time since the 2016 season, Nebraska finished the year with a winning record. So, expectations will be on the rise for third-year head coach Matt Rhule and the Cornhuskers. Rhule only has nine returning starters, five on offense and four on defense. Quarterback Dylan Raiola is back, but the team will need to integrate some new wide receivers. But his running back has returned, and he has three returning starters on the offensive line. As for Cincinnati, the Bearcats took a step in the right direction last season, finishing with a 5-7 record compared to 3-9 the year before. Head coach Scott Satterfield doesn’t have a ton of returning talent to work with (ten starters, four offense and six defense). Brendan Sorsby is back at quarterback, and he has two of his offensive linemen from last season. But while the line has been rebuilt, it’s expected to be one of the better units in the Big 12. Sorsby will have to break in a new group of wide receivers, but the Bearcats did a good job of mining the transfer portal for talent.

There is talent on both sides of the ball for each team, but in Week 1, experience and a solid run game tends to win early-season games. Nebraska’s veteran leadership on offense will help them work the kinks out and get on track sooner rather than later. Cincinnati has some talent in the front four, but if they start to slow down the run game, Dylan Raiola will begin to take advantage of his passing lanes and talented receivers. Both teams are decent and should improve this season, but Nebraska appears to be a few steps ahead of Cincinnati in its development.
