by Carlos Zabala in Champions League Picks
A fascinating match will take place at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium when Italian champions Napoli face Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon on Matchday 2 of the Champions League.
The Lions, the team from the Portuguese capital, beat Estoril on Matchday 7 of the Portuguese League this weekend, marking another satisfactory start to the season. They are second in the Portuguese league with 19 goals in seven matches. In their first Champions League match, they also thrashed Kairat Almaty with two goals from Trincao.
Sporting Lisbon, who finished 23rd out of 36 in the previous Champions League round of 2024/2025, have one of the toughest schedules for this new Champions League season, which will see them face Marseille, Juventus, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Athletic Club. Therefore, it is doubly crucial for Sporting to get three points on their visit to the Serie A club.
However, bookmakers and many bettors are leaning more towards Napoli; the bookmakers give the reigning champions an implied probability of over 50% of beating the Portuguese side, especially considering that Sporting Lisbon has never in its history, in 17 matches against Serie A clubs in European competitions, managed to secure even one victory.

Our Napoli vs Sporting Lisbon Prediction
The Neapolitan side, led by manager Antonio Conte, had an unsatisfactory start to the Champions League. On their trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City, they lost when Di Lorenzo got himself sent off, leaving his team at a disadvantage that the City took advantage of by scoring two goals in the second half.
So far, Napoli have only played two home games this season, two wins: a 1-0 victory against Cagliari and a 3-2 victory against Pisa, with goals from Glimour, Spinazzola, and Lucca.
Worse still, Conte, in addition to being without Di Lorenzo due to his red card for the match against the Portuguese club, is also still without Lukaku, and Spinazzola is another possible sideline due to a muscle problem. If this last issue is confirmed, the Lisbon Lions could well present a tight game, with a top-flight striker who has scored seven goals in his last five matches.
Our prediction for Sporting Lisbon vs Napoli is: Sporting Lisbon to win or draw.
