The women’s singles final of the 2025 Canadian Open will feature a battle of stars from different generations. On Thursday, Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko will try to set a date with destiny as she guns for her first WTA 1000 title against four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka of Japan.
Mboko earned her first WTA 1000-level final appearance after she rallied from a set down to edge former Wimbledon Open champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, 1-6 7-5 7-6(4). The Canadian recovered from a nightmarish start by displaying terrific ball-striking and poise under pressure to outlast Rybakina in a grueling three-set battle. Mboko collected 50 points off the first serves and broke Rybakina six times to offset the 11 double faults she committed in the match.
Naomi Osaka reached her first WTA 1000-level final since the 2022 Miami Open after besting Clara Tauson of Denmark 6-2 7-6(7). Osaka continued to succeed with her serves, capturing 30 points off the first and 20 more off the second to allow only two service breaks against Tauson. Moreover, Osaka also converted 4 of 5 breakpoint chances, which helped her secure the win in straight sets.

Expect Mboko to play aggressively from the get-go, knowing she can’t afford to let Osaka dictate the points. The Canadian will be banking on her athleticism and massive forehands to neutralize Osaka’s burgeoning baseline game. In the end, it will boil down to experience in pressure-packed matches. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner and former world No.1, has plenty of those. She’s been playing the best stretch of tennis in years, reminding everyone that there’s still a lot left in her tank. Mboko will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years, that’s for sure. She will do well in her first-ever WTA 1000 championship match, giving Canada another woman to cheer on in the upcoming tournaments. That said, I still can’t see her outgunning Osaka, who is so experienced in high-leverage matches.
