Naomi Osaka of Japan is set to take on Paula Badosa of Spain in a tantalizing second-round clash on Thursday at the 2025 Italian Open.
After crashing out in the first round of the Madrid Open, Osaka has put together a six-match win streak that saw her capturing a WTA challenger tournament at Open 35 Saint Malo and decimating Sara Errani 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round in Rome. Osaka, who is on a comeback trail since her return from maternity leave last year, is seeking a title in more than four years. The last time Osaka hoisted a championship trophy was at the 2022 Australian Open.
On the other hand, Badosa will be playing her first clay-court match this year after skipping the first month of clay-court season to rehabilitate her injured back. Now that she’s cleared to play again, Badosa joins the field of competitors vying for one of the most prestigious clay-court titles outside the French Open. The Spaniard still sits in the top 10 of the WTA World Ranking despite her inactivity, though she has to protect 120 points at this tournament to keep her top 10 status.

Our Naomi Osaka vs Paula Badosa Prediction
Fearless Forecast: Naomi Osaka cruises to a convincing win over Paula Badosa.
This is the first time Osaka will face Badosa at a WTA main tour event. Hot off a title at Open 35 Saint Malo, the Japanese roared into the Rome in terrific form, which was proven to be true when she pummeled Errani before her countryman on Tuesday. Badosa, on the other hand, will play her first clay-court match in weeks due to a back injury she suffered in Miami. Badosa is a decent clay-court player who boasts a quarterfinal stint in the French Open, but I doubt she’s already ready to take on a vastly-improving Naomi Osaka on Wednesday. Until Badosa proved that back is no longer an issue, placing a bet on her to cover a spread or even win comes with a lot of risk. It has been a while since we saw Osaka playing at a high level consistently, but her run at a Challenger Tourney could be a premonition for bigger things to come from the former world’s No.1. Our betting prediction for Naomi Osaka vs. Paula Badosa: Naomi Osaka will win 2-0.
