Former Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka of Japan and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia go head-to-head on Friday for a spot in the round of 16 at the 2025 Canadian Open.
Osaka reached the round of 32 with a come-from-behind win over Liudmila Samsonova of Russia 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Down a set and trailing Samsonova 1-3 in the second set, the four-time Grand Slam winner displayed incredible resilience to climb out of the precarious situations and force a tiebreaker, where Osaka’s experience stood out. With Samsonova visibly shaken, Osaka continued to pressure the Russian until she completed the gutsy comeback win on Wednesday.
Ostapenko barged into the third round after fending off Renata Zarazua 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in the second round. The former French Open winner had to ramp up her intensity to beat a resilient Zarazua. Ostapenko is 7-8 in hard-court matches this year and 17-14 overall.
