CF Monterrey and the New York Red Bulls face off on Sunday in a Leagues Cup match. Monterrey is looking to bounce back after a 3-2 loss in their opening Leagues Cup game. In that match, Rayados showed their firepower with veteran midfielder Sergio Canales finding the net, but defensive lapses saw them defeated by MLS side FC Cincinnati.
Monterrey came into the tournament as one of Liga MX’s top clubs – they were a playoff contender in the recent Clausura season and even represented the region in the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. However, the five-time Mexican champions now find themselves in must-win mode to keep their Leagues Cup hopes alive.
Despite the setback, Monterrey’s tournament pedigree is strong, having reached the semifinals of Leagues Cup 2023 and consistently performing well in international competitions.
The New York Red Bulls, meanwhile, made a winning start to their Leagues Cup campaign. They earned a dramatic 1-0 victory over Chivas Guadalajara on Thursday, with substitute Emil Forsberg scoring a stunning free-kick in second-half stoppage time. That result gives the Red Bulls an early three points and a boost of confidence.
In MLS play, New York has had an up-and-down 2025 season, sitting mid-pack in the Eastern Conference.
