Mirra Andreeva of Russia will try to qualify for the fourth round of the 2025 National Bank Open on Thursday when she faces McCartney Kessler of the United States.
Andreeva got a free pass to the third round of this WTA 1000 event in Montreal after her opponent, Bianca Andreescu, withdrew because of her ankle injury in her first-round match with Barbora Krejcikova. As a result, Andreeva will be stepping onto the court on Thursday with fresh legs and extra preparation time ahead of her clash with Kessler.
Kessler also made it through to the round of 32 after coming through with a come-from-behind win over Australian rising star Maya Joint 4-6 6-4 6-3 in the second round. Now ranked No.32 in the world, Kessler received a bye into the second round of the Canadian Open, facing the up-and-coming Joint, who is fresh off an upset win over Washington Open champion Leylah Fernandez 6-4. 6-1. After a flat start, Kessler started to play aggressive and efficient tennis in the following two sets, allowing her to regain control of the match. Kessler finished the match with 117 points, 43 of which came off the first serves. She also broke Joint four times while surrendering three service breaks.
