The Milwaukee Brewers (61-47) begin a 6-game road trip with a 3-game set against the Washington Nationals (49-60). Milwaukee lost 4 of their last 6 games to close out a mediocre month of July and currently sit atop the NL Central by 5.5 games over the St. Louis Cardinals. Washington had an even worse end of July. The Nats dropped 7 of their last 9, including 4 straight, a losing streak they will look to snap tonight against the Brewers. These teams last met in mid-July where the Brewers were able to take 2 out of 3 at home. Tonight’s starter for the Brewers, Frankie Montas (4-8, 5.01) will be making his 1st start for the franchise after being acquired from the Reds last week. Montas is coming off a 3-game stretch in which he has allowed 16 runs over just 16 innings. His counterpart, Jake Irvin (8-8, 3.44) has fared better over his last 2 starts. He has gone 12.1 innings and allowed 4 total runs. That said, his start before those 2 came against this Brewers team and he was lit up for 6 runs on 9 hits over just 4 innings of work. He will need to shake that previous rough start off in order to be effective tonight.
