The No. 3 Indiana Hoosiers (6-0) will host the Michigan State Spartans (3-3) at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, IN, at 3:30 p.m. EST Saturday. Fans can follow the action once the game gets underway via the Peacock app.
This could be a trap game if the Hoosiers are not careful. After taking down Oregon in Eugene last weekend, it would be natural for Indiana to feel like it can coast this week against a mediocre Spartans team. The Hoosier offense and defense rank inside the top ten in several statistical categories. Surely, they don’t need to bring their ‘A’ game to beat Michigan State, right? Then again, there isn’t much for the Spartans to hang their hats on. All three wins came during their soft non-conference schedule; they’ve lost by double digits in all three conference losses. Barring Indiana making a number of mistakes in this game, Michigan State’s best chance will be to develop a run game, control the clock, and keep Fernando Mendoza and the IU offense on the sideline.
But that will be easier said than done against an Indiana defense averaging 86 rushing yards per game allowed. It would also require the Spartans to play above and beyond how they’ve performed this season (131.2 rushing yards per game) against the toughest opponent they’ll face all season.

As long as the Hoosiers don’t phone it in, Indiana will win this game (and there is no reason to believe that they will). So, the question is whether they can cover a 27.5-point spread. IU certainly has the firepower, whether they’re running the ball or via the pass game, to run up the score on the Spartans. Michigan State has talent, but not enough to slow the Hoosiers down. With how the Indiana defense has played, the Spartans may not get a first down until garbage time. It’s a giant spread, but I think the Hoosiers will cover it against this Spartans team.
