The Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins are heading for a rubber match on Saturday after splitting the first two games of their series at Truist Park.
The Braves have lost four of their last five games, including Friday’s 1-5 loss to the Marlins. After exploding for eight runs in Game 1, Atlanta’s offense went silent again, posting only two hits in 29 at-bats. The Braves are only averaging 3.5 runs per game and pitching a 4.04 ERA in their past five games. They are currently fourth in the NL East with a 48-67 record, 17.5 games behind the No.1 team in the division, the 65-49 Philadelphia Phillies.
The Marlins have won two of their last three games to move one win away from reaching .500 at 57-58. Miami’s pitching and batting numbers are subpar by league standards, but they are getting the job done with clutch plays on both ends. The Marlins are generating only 3.3 runs per game and pitching a 5.09 ERA in their last 5.

Friday’s win over the Braves is a rare feat for the Marlins, who are 5-16 SU in their last 21 games when playing on the road against Atlanta.
Atlanta’s Hurston Waldrep is set to make his second start after earning a win in his debut on August 2. In that game, Waldrep pitched for 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run and three hits with four strikeouts.
The Marlins will counter with a veteran hurler, Ryan Gusto, who sports a 7-4 record with a 4.92 ERA this season. After giving up eight earned runs over 3.1 innings in a 3-15 loss to the Athletics, Gusto delivered stronger numbers in July 30 starts versus the Nationals, giving up one earned run over six innings in Miami’s 9-1 win.
Despite Atlanta’s formidable record against the Marlins at home, Miami has proven it can win at Truist Park following Friday’s result. The Marlins are playing terrific baseball on the road with a 15-6 record in their 21 games away from home. Waldren is another promising pitcher to watch out for in the Braves’ vaunted starting rotation, but it’s still too early for him to outshine a pitcher of Gusto’s caliber. By the way, the Marlins are 36-19 against the spread in road games this season, and 26-14 ATS when playing NL teams on the road.
