The Indianapolis Colts will debut their new quarterback, Daniel Jones, in Sunday’s season opener against the visiting Miami Dolphins at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Bookmakers anticipate a close battle, with the Colts listed as slight favorites on the run line at -1.5 points (-102). It means the home team only needs to beat the Dolphins by at least two points to beat the spread.

After dropping their first two preseason games against the Baltimore Ravens (16-24) and the Golden Bay Packers (19-23), Indianapolis closed out its offseason buildup with a resounding 41-14 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Backup quarterback Riley Leonard got a starting role in this game, covering 189 yards on 15 of 20 passing with one touchdown. Rookie running back Ulysses Bentley IV ran for 189 yards and scored one TD. Daniels Jones, who beat Anthony Richardson Sr. for the starting quarterback job, delivered solid numbers in the first two preseason games. Jones completed 10 of her 21 passes for 144 yards in a loss to the Ravens in Week 1 preseason and went 7-for-11 for 109 yards in another setback to the Packers.
The Dolphins wrapped up their three-game preseason schedule undefeated. Miami duked it out to a 24-24 tie with the Chicago Bears in Week 1 before outgunning the Detroit Lions 24-17 in Week 2. The Dolphins punctuated their offseason buildup with a 14-6 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is set for his fifth consecutive season-opening start.

Like most projections for this matchup, expect a back-and-forth battle between these two evenly-matched teams. The Colts are trying to win their first series-opening game for the first time in 12 years, and they are pinning their hopes on their newly acquired quarterback, Daniel Jones, to end the curse. Jones, who put up encouraging numbers in the preseason, will have dynamic wide receivers in Tyler Warren and Josh Downs, who can really deal heavy damage if they are utilized properly.
On the other hand, the Dolphins will try to squeeze out any good stuff left from veteran and former Pro Bowl wideout Tyreek Hill. The 31-year-old wideout looks to create more magic with Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who is trying to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season campaign.
The Colts' defense is shaping up to be really good this year, or even better, depending on the performance of the personnel they added to soup up their secondary. Tagavailoa can still make the Dolphins a dangerous team if he finds his elite form back this season. However, I really believe that Daniel Jones will shine in Week 1, especially if he finds a way to find his weapons downfield.
