by Stephen Abiola in CONCACAF Gold Cup Picks

Mexico and Saudi Arabia will go head to head in the quarterfinals of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Saturday night at the State Farm Arena. The Mexicans will enter this matchup as favorites to advance to the semifinals and successfully defend their Gold Cup title. El Tri topped Group A of this competition with seven points after sweeping aside the Dominican Republic and Suriname before sharing the spoils with Costa Rica. A convincing win against Saudi Arabia would be welcome.

Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, are making their debut in this tournament as invited guests. The visitors didn’t look very convincing in their group matches, winning only once, which was against Haiti in Matchday 3. However, this didn’t prevent them from progressing to the knockout rounds after finishing second with four points. A win against Mexico can give the squad confidence that they can make history by winning the title in their debut campaign.

Mexico - Saudi Arabia: Form Analysis

Mexico has every reason to come into this matchup feeling excited. However, they also have a few injury concerns, with Harving Lorzano and Henry Martin being the notable absentees. The duo sustained knocks during training. Jesus Angulo will also be unavailable for selection after withdrawing from the team earlier, whereas Cesar Montes will be serving a one-match suspension. The good news for Aguirre is that their most recent matchup ended without any new injuries.

Meanwhile, the Asians also have some injury concerns in their camp. Renard’s side will be without regular starters, including Salem Al Dawsari and Nawaf Al Dawsari. Both players were unavailable for the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup. Al Ittihad’s left back, Hasan Kadesh, is also sidelined with a hamstring injury. We could see Renard deploy Feras Albrikan on the wings, where he was highly effective in their last group match.

Mexico & Saudi Arabia Squad Analysis

Mexico is undoubtedly the in-form team heading into this matchup. Javier Aguirre’s side kicked off their title defense with a thrilling 3-2 win over the Dominican Republic before getting a dominant 2-0 victory over Suriname. Their goalless draw against Costa Rica ensured that they progressed to the quarterfinals for the fifth straight tournament. The North Americans are also seasoned semifinalists, reaching the semis of this competition in each of the last nine events.

As for Saudi Arabia, reaching the quarterfinals of this tournament is a significant milestone in their first appearance. Finishing second in Group D ensured that “The Green Falcons” had the inevitable task of meeting a football powerhouse. Harve Renard’s side hasn’t been impressive in attack, scoring only once in the group stage. However, their defense, which has also conceded twice, should help them compete well with the Mexicans.

Our Mexico vs Saudi Arabia Prediction

This is only the second time Mexico and Saudi Arabia have met in a competitive setting. The Mexicans secured a 2-1 victory when these two sides last met during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Henry Martin and Luis Chavez were both on the mark. Their recent form and experience in this tournament also support the idea that the Mexicans could win this matchup. They have what it takes to easily get past the Saudis, who are not scoring enough goals to see out matches. Still, the visitors’ defense can be stubborn, so don’t expect a big score on Saturday.

Our prediction for Mexico vs Saudi Arabia: Under 2.5 goals to hit.

Mexico vs Saudi Arabia - Other Interesting Picks

Both teams not to score

Odds -165

Our other prediction is for Mexico to keep a clean sheet. The Mexicans have been very rigid in defense lately, keeping a clean sheet in three of their last four matches. The Saudis have also looked great in defense in this tournament, conceding only two goals. Therefore, expect this match to be won in attack.
