After coming from behind to get the better of DR Congo, the English will take one of the co-hosts in the Round-of-16. Taking on the Mexicans in Mexico City is far from easy, but can Thomas Tuchel’s men do what very few other teams have done in recent times and come out on top?
On paper, a Round-of-32 tie against DR Congo looked fairly straightforward, but in reality, it proved to be far from simple, with the Three Lions going a goal down after less than ten minutes, before going in at half time behind. Fortunately, thanks to world-class finishing of Harry Kane, they turned it around in the second half, setting up an intriguing Round-of-16 fixture against the Mexicans.
The English will be feeling confident, and they certainly appeared to be a group united after that Round-of-32 success, but playing at altitude, in Mexico’s backyard, Tuchel’s men could struggle more than the early odds would have us believe. In the betting, ‘Mexico to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ appeals.

Mexico - England: Form Analysis
The Mexicans are yet to put a foot wrong at this tournament, winning three out of three in the group stages, before winning their Round-of-32 tie against Ecuador without conceding too. As a result, Javier Aguirre’s men will expect themselves to make life very tough for the English, especially as they are the ones used to competing at altitude in Mexico City.
We know that Tuchel has some top players at his disposal, but his team are struggling to really get going, especially in the final third, which does not bode well ahead of a game against a very strong Mexican side that will have both conditions and the home crowd in favor.
The Three Lions were always going to make it through the group stages unscathed, whether they played well or not. They didn’t play that well, and they still topped the group, so there was no reason for Thomas Tuchel’s men not to fancy themselves to get the better of DR Congo in the Round-of-32, and get the better of the Africans they did, but were they convincing? Absolutely not. We know that Tuchel has some top players at his disposal, but his team are struggling to really get going, especially in the final third, which does not bode well ahead of a game against a very strong Mexican side that will have both conditions and the home crowd in favor.

Mexico & England Squad Analysis
Will the Mexicans make many changes ahead of this game? It seems unlikely. Julian Quinones has been one of the best players at the tournament so far, scoring regularly, and the pacey forward is expected to again feature prominently. Teenage sensation Gilberto Mora has started the last two and should be in the starting XI again. Brian Gutierrez has also caught the eye at this tournament, but he looks booked for a role as an impact sub.

Thomas Tuchel could make a few changes here, especially as his team struggled to really hurt a weaker opponent early on during the previous round. Marcus Rashford and Noni Madueke, both of whom have failed to really make a positive impact, may be switched out for Bukayo Sake and Anthony Gordon, while if the boss wants his team to create more when teams sit back, he could turn to Eberechi Eze.

Our Mexico vs England Prediction
The English have now gone three games at this World Cup without conceding multiple goals, but let’s be honest, they could easily have conceded twice against DR Congo, while when their highest-ranked opponent (Croatia) did bag multiple goals during the first round of group games.
In unfavorable conditions, the Three Lions may fail to roar offensively, and if they’re not careful, they could come unstuck at the back, especially on the break against a Mexican team that has scored five goals in the last two games.
Our Mexico vs England Pick: Mexico to Score Over 1.5 Goals.

Mexico to Win
If you’re looking to bet on the winner of this game, then side with the Mexicans. The English may be the higher-ranked team, but they are far from used to competing at altitude, while let’s face it, they’ve not exactly been fluent at this tournament. In contrast, the Mexicans have looked very solid, and they know how to use their rather unique home advantage to good effect, so at the very least, they deserve to be priced less generously. Betting on the Mexico win at odds of +220 offers value for money.
