The Utah Jazz will face the Memphis Grizzlies on Christmas Eve. The Jazz have had an inconsistent season, with their record standing near the bottom of the Western Conference in late December. In recent weeks they have alternated wins and losses. Through mid-December the team went 4–4 in its last eight games. Utah's recent stretch included impressive victories over teams like Houston and Brooklyn, and they even won an overtime shootout against Dallas. However, they also dropped tough contests against New York and Oklahoma City, and suffered narrow home losses to the Lakers and Orlando. Overall, the Jazz have shown they can score in bunches but have struggled to string together wins with any regularity.

The Memphis Grizzlies have been a bit more stable. As of late December, Memphis held a winning record and a higher place in the playoff picture. The Grizzlies went 4–3 in December, demonstrating resilience in most games. They posted solid home wins against Portland and Sacramento, and also swept two wins over the Los Angeles Clippers (one at home and one on the road). Their only setbacks were close losses on the road in San Antonio and a tight home loss to Utah (Utah won that rematch by four points).
