Fresh off an upset win, Maya Joint of Australia will try to take her campaign into the third round of the 2025 Canadian Open as she squares off with McCartney Kessler of the United States on Wednesday.
Joint got her sweet revenge on Monday after pulling off a 6-4 6-1 win over Leylah Annie Fernandez, the newly-crowned Washington Open champion who eliminated her in the first round of that tournament. With the lessons of the 3-6, 3-6 loss still in her head, Joint executed a perfect game plan to take Fernandez out of her game and it worked. Joint won 22 points off the first serves and captured six breakpoints that proved the key in the match.
Meanwhile, Kessler advanced to the second round after escaping Caroline Dolehide 7-6(3) 5-7 6-3. Kessler managed to hack out the close win by converting 5 of 12 breakpoint chances and winning 79 percent of her first serves. It was a much-needed victory for Kessler, who suffered a heartbreaking first-round loss to Marketa Vondrousova at the 2025 Wimbledon Open, a week after ruling the Nottingham Open.

I am picking Kessler to win this intriguing second-round clash mainly because of she’s the more experienced player coming in. Joint is having a promising year at the age of 19, having already won two WTA titles this year and earned four top-50 wins, including a stunning victory over Leylah Fernandez in the first round.
However, Joint also faces a skilled opponent in the second round. Kessler is 17-9 in hard-court matches in 2025 and boasts a 67 percent win rate on the surface.
