The Indiana Hoosiers will be looking to make history on Saturday when they host the Maryland Terrapins in their Big Ten opener. With a win, Indiana can become the third team in program history to get off to a 5-0 start and the first since 1967. The Hoosiers are 6.5-point favorites over the Terrapins (odds via FanDuel). However, Maryland is off to a solid 3-1 start this season and will not roll over for Indiana. But if they are to score an upset, the Terrapins will need their pass defense to step against Kurtis Rourke and the IU passing game. The Hoosiers have been carving up defenses for 288+ yards per game.
Their passing game is also the sixth most efficient in the nation.
The Maryland defense has struggled to stop the pass. Opponents have been throwing close to 250 yards a game against the Terrapins. In their one loss this season to Michigan State, Spartans quarterback Aidan Chiles went 24-38 for 363 yards and three touchdowns (with two interceptions). However, even if Maryland slows down the IU passing game, they’ll have to deal with a run game that is averaging over 200 yards per game. The Terrapin defense is No. 32 against the run, giving up just over a hundred yards per game on the ground.

Maryland doesn’t stand a chance against Kurtis Rourke and the IU passing game. They don’t have a pass rush that can get to Rourke with any regularity, and the secondary is questionable on a good day. Maryland’s best chance is to get their high-powered passing attack going against the IU defense—which is tenth in the country against the pass and 21st in pass defense efficiency. Those stats were generated against terrible competition, but it doesn’t matter. Rourke will lead the Hoosiers to their fifth win of the season.
