At the WTA event in Montreal, known currently as the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, there's an interesting match taking place on Thursday, and it's a match between two players that are quite closely grouped if we look at the rankings. It's also a match between two players who have played a lot of tennis against each other in the past. Marta Kostyuk and Daria Kasatkina will clash for the eighth time since 2020. Kostyuk came out on top when the pair last met, but Kasatkina has won four of the last five renewals of this match, two of which were hard-court matches, so she ought to be confident here. The Aussie looked in decent condition when beating Potapova in straight sets during the first round.
Things weren't quite as simple for Marta Kostyuk, who needed three sets to beat Marketa Vondrousova, picking up her first win on any surface since beating Laylah Fernandez in Rome back in early May. It's fair to say that the Ukrainian has had her struggles. Can she put those issues behind her and kick on? We'll soon find out.

Marta Kostyuk is the early favorite ahead of this clash, but I just cannot agree with that. Kostyuk battled hard to secure a very decent win over Marketa Vondrousova in the first round, which is not to be ignored, but that match will have taken lots out of her, for sure. Meanwhile, Kasatkina won with relative ease against Blinkova, possibly leaving her better placed to give her all here. I also cannot ignore the fact that the Aussie, who is ranked above her Ukrainian opponent, has a very good record in this match, winning four of her last five matches against Kostyuk, including two on hard courts.
