The 2025 Wimbledon Open will pit this year’s Berlin Ladies Open champion Marketa Vondrousova against Nottingham Open winner McCartney Kessler in an explosive opening-round encounter at All-England Club.
Vondrousova is coming into this year’s Wimbledon as a champion again after capturing her first WTA title in two years at the Berlin Ladies Open. Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon Open women’s singles winner, put together a campaign to be remembered for years as she eliminated a number of heavyweights in the competition. She defeated reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys 7-5 7-6(6), Russian rising star Diana Shnaider 6-3 6-7(3) 6-3, two-time Wimbledon Open finalist Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-1, and world’s No.1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-2 6-4 before capping the amazing run with a 7-6(10) 4-6 6-2 win over Xinyu Wang of China in Berlin.
Kessler also put together a terrific week at Nottingham, where she racked up five straights wins to earn her first grass-court title on the WTA Tour. The American downed Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-5 6-7(3) 7-5, Lin Zhu 6-1 6-4, Katie Bouter 6-3 3-6 6-4, Rebecca Sramkova 6-4 6-2 and Dayana Yastremska 6-4 7-5 to rule the Nottingham Open.
