Clay courts are making their return in the 2025 tennis season! In Germany, the ATP 500 Munich tournament kicks off this week, and we’ll witness a first-round duel between Argentina’s Mariano Navone and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Mariano Navone is no stranger to clay this year, having traveled to Argentina to play the Buenos Aires tournament in February. Supported by his home crowd, he managed to reach the quarterfinals after defeating World No. 12 Holger Rune. However, he was eliminated in the second round in Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, and more recently in Bucharest, although he did win his opening matches in all three tournaments. Last week, he secured two qualifying victories at the Monte Carlo Masters before falling in straight sets to Matteo Berrettini (World No. 34).
Felix Auger-Aliassime is the third seed in this tournament. Despite a strong start to the season with wins and titles in Adelaide and Montpellier, the Canadian has recently suffered back-to-back losses for the second time in a few weeks. He was knocked out in the first round at the BNP Paribas Open and the second round at Miami. However, the biggest surprise came last week in Monaco, where he was eliminated in the first round by Daniel Altmaier without winning a set.
