It’s time for the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati! In this match, the Ohio crowd will be cheering on local player Madison Keys as she faces China’s Xiyu Wang for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Madison Keys has struggled to really get her season going; not only did she fail to defend her title in Adelaide, losing in the quarterfinals, but she also failed to defend her title at the Australian Open, falling in the round of 16. She has struggled in the WTA 1000 events, failing to string together wins at Indian Wells and Miami in March, and didn’t appear to be in better form in Toronto in early August, where she lost in the round of 16 to Marta Kostyuk. Despite a resurgence this summer, capitalizing on the grass courts to win the title in Eastbourne, the 31-year-old has not shone on hard courts lately and needs to regain her confidence in this final tournament before the US Open.

Xiyu Wang, for her part, arrived in Cincinnati on the back of three consecutive losses. Having entered through qualifying, the Chinese player then benefited from M. Timofeeva’s withdrawal before upsetting No. 1 seed L. Fernandez in three sets. And with E. Svitolina’s withdrawal, she enters this round of 16 with an extra day of rest to try to pull off an upset against the American.
