Giant-killing competitors Liudmila Samsonova of Russia and Wang Xinyu of China slug it out on Saturday for a spot in the championship round of the 2025 Berlin Ladies Open.
Samsonova punched her ticket to the semifinal round with a resounding a 6-1, 6-1 win over Amanda Anisimova of the United States on Friday. Less than 24 hours after grueling three-set tussle with Jessica Pegula, Samsonova showed incredible endurance and grit to overwhelm Anisimova, who just finished runner-up to Tatjana Maria at the Queen’s Club Championship last week. Samsonova landed 73 percent of her first serve, winning 23 points. She also broke Anisimova 5 times, allowing her to pull away and take out her second American foe in the tournament.
Fresh off a massive win over reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff 6-3 6-3, Wang delivered another signature win, this time against former world’s No.10 Paula Badosa of Spain 6-1 ret. Buoyed by her massive victories over Ons Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina, and Gauff, Wang sustained her fine form as she smoothered Badosa into retirement due to a right hip injury. After a sleepy 2025 campaign, Wang has now improved her record to 15-14 and boasts four career wins against the WTA top 10.
