It's also quarter final time at the WTA event in Cleveland, which is formally known as Tennis in the Land. On Thursday evening, pre-tournament favorite and top seed Liudmila Samsonova will be back in action following two very impressive straight-set wins against Caroline Dolehide and Yafan Wang.
The Russian will now go up against Sorana Cirstea, who has reached the quarters thanks to win against Lois Boisson and Jil Teichmann.
Boisson was the fifth seed, so it's fair to say that the Romanian has been playing well, but she'll need to go up several gears to seriously compete with Samsonova. Does she have that in the locker? I seriously doubt it. Samsonova won this tournament in 2022 and unless her level drops considerably in this match, she should be about to go within two victories of regaining her title.

Those who read my preview of this event will know that I was rather sweet on Liudmila Samsonova's chances of going all the way in Cleveland this week, and so far the Russian has shown why she was the pre-tournament favorite, making light work of reaching the quarters, maintaining her 100% record at this event.
She's been in strong form and is yet to drop a set, and let's face it, it would be a bit surprising if she dropped a set to a player currentlty ranked outside of the top 100.
Sorana Cirstea has played well too, but this match demands much more from the Romanian, and I seriously doubt that she has enough in the tank to get the better of a player who comfortably won in straight sets when these two met back in 2023.
