Naomi Osaka of Japan will go head-to-head with a familiar face, Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, in the second round of the 2025 Canadian Open.
Osaka barged into the second round with a breezy win over Ariana Arseneault of Canada 6-4, 6-2. The four-time Grand Slam champion yielded only one service break as she seized full control by winning 79 percent of her first serves and 52 percent of the second serves. Osaka also broke the Canadian four times, scoring 26 points as a returner.
Samsonova will be playing in her first match since falling to eventual Wimbledon Open champion Iga Swiatek 2-6 5-7 in the quarterfinal of that event. Samsonova secured a spot in the second round of the Canadian Open, thanks to the first-round bye she received for being ranked No.16 in the WTA world rankings.
