Facing the world number two is always a serious challenge, but it may just be a challenge that Samsonova rises to. After all, she's playing very well at present, while her recent record against higher-ranked players is not bad at all.
Let's be real, Elena Rybakina is never an easy player to oppose, especially on hard courts, where she usually finds a way through. Having said that, the Kazakh is up against a hugely in-form opponent, a player who clearly loves the conditions in Toronto, where she's previously reached the final. If we also consider that Liudmila Samsonova has avoided a straight-set defeat in four of her previous five hard-court matches against Rybakina, then the Russian goes down as being a too generously priced here. She can definitely compete.
