The Los Angeles Rams (11-7 SU, 10-8 ATS) match up with the Philadelphia Eagles (15-3 SU, 12-6 ATS), a rematch of the teams’ game in November in Los Angeles. In that game, the Eagles showed their power with a 37-20 win over the Rams, punctuated by two Saquon Barkley touchdowns of more than 70 yards. And that presents the biggest worry in this game for the Rams: they don’t have the kind of ground defense needed to slow down Philadelphia.
The Eagles have run over everyone they’ve played this year, as Barkley and Jalen Hurts give Philadelphia two big weapons in the ground game. The Eagles are substantially weaker in the pass game, however, as they attempt the fewest number of passes in the league. Of course, the pass defense is the stronger part of the Rams’ defense, which usually isn’t that great to begin with. Los Angeles did get a gift from Sam Darnold last week in blowing out the Minnesota Vikings, but L. A. usually cannot stop the pass or the run particularly well.

When the Philadelphia defense is clicking, it’s really difficult to move the ball on them. The Eagles proved that their defensive prowess was no fluke by holding Green Bay to 10 points in the wild card round. That marked the ninth time in 10 games that the Eagles had held their opponent to 20 points or less. Over the Eagles’ past 15 games, only Jacksonville, Tampa Bay and Washington managed to score more than that magic number.
Defense has been where the Eagles have shined all year, as they give up the fewest yards per completion and the fewest overall total passing yards in the NFL. Philadelphia has a rock-solid run defense as well, which it probably won’t need in this game. The Rams tend to win based almost solely on the arm of Matthew Stafford. If he’s hitting his receivers regularly, Los Angeles has things heading in the right direction. If Stafford can’t get in a rhythm, the Rams don’t really have much of another option.

If the Rams have to spend the second half trying to overcome a slow start, they’ll have to take some extra chances.

Los Angeles was honestly fortunate that a fumble return for a touchdown was wiped out for being an incomplete pass, a call that completely changed the trajectory of the game.
The Eagles’ most vulnerable period would have been last week, when they were just getting Hurts back and didn’t really know what things would look like. Now that Hurts is back and playing the way he’s capable of, the Eagles look like the team they’ve been all year. Only Detroit, Kansas City and Buffalo have really appeared to be on Philadelphia’s level when the Eagles are at their best. This game seems to be unfolding toward Philadelphia’s strengths.
