Fresh off a title at Queens, Tatjana Maria of Germany begins a fresh campaign at the Bad Homburg Open on Sunday against Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada in the first round.
Maria will attempt to slice her way to another title after racking up six consecutive wins, including four seeded players, to capture the first women’s singles title at Queens in decades. Playing with a throwback style of play, Maria vanquished heavy hitters like Karolina Muchova 6-7(3) 7-5 6-1, Elena Rybakina 6-4 7-6(4), Madison Keys 6-3 7-6(3) and Amanda Anisimova 6-3 6-4 to win the WTA 500 grass-court title.
Fernandez, meanwhile, will try to turn her grass-court season around after going 2-2 in her last four matches on the surface. The former US Open runner-up is eager to secure her first win over Maria after losing to the German vet on three occasions, including a 6-7, 2-6 defeat in the first round at Queens three weeks ago.
