Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada will go up against teen rising star Maya Joint of Australia in the first round of the 2025 Mubadala Citi Open on Monday in Washington, D.C.
Fernandez will be playing in her first match since her second-round exit at the 2025 Wimbledon Open. The former US Open runner-up aims to get better results as the WTA Tour shifts back to the hard courts starting this week in Washington. The Canadian carries a respectable 61.6 percent win rate on the surface, 10-8 in 2025, while all three of her WTA Main Tour titles came in hard-court tournaments.
Joint also hopes to sustain her steady climb in the world rankings after rising to world’s No.37 after the grass-court season. Joint enters the hard-court season already with two WTA Main Tour title under her name. The 19-year-old Aussie won her first-ever main tour crowd at the 2025 Morocco Open, beating Jaqueline Cristian on clay 6–3, 6–2. She followed it up with another title months later, but this time on the grass courts of Eastbourne, after edging Alexander Eala of the Philippines 6–4, 1–6, 7–6(12–10) in the final.

Our Leylah Annie Fernandez vs Maya Joint Prediction
Why should you pick Leylah Fernandez to cover -1.5 games? This could go down the wire, but I am taking Fernandez to beat a --1.5-game spread at +100. Aside from being the more experienced player, Fernandez has historically accomplished strong results during the North American hard-court season. It has been a rough past two years for the former US Open finalist, yet I still believe that there is still a lot left in the tank of Fernandez. Joint is a promising rising star from the Land Down Under, but so far, she has only earned three wins against WTA top-50 players. Meanwhile, Fernandez boasts a 14-15 slate against the top-50 players in the world, proving that she's a legit competitor on the tour.
Our betting prediction for Leylah Annie Fernandez vs. Maya Joint: Leylah Annie Fernandez -1.5 Games.
