Leylah Fernandez of Canada will go head-to-head with a surging Anna Kalinskaya of Russia in the women’s singles final of the 2025 Mubadala Citi Open on Sunday.
Fernandez punched her way to the championship match after grinding out a close win over Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 6-7(2) 7-6(3) 7-6(3) on Saturday. Ranked No. 36 in the world, the former US Open runner-up dug deep from her bag of tricks to outlast Rybakina after three thrilling sets. Fernandez broke only once in the match but collected 59 points off the first serves and 27 off the second, on top of 12 aces.
Kalinskaya swept Emma Raducanu 6-4 6-3 in their semifinal pairing, foiling a potential 2021 US Open final rematch between Raducanu and Fernandez. The Russian has been playing a high-level tennis this week, ousting quality opponents such as Kamilla Rakhimova, Magda Linette, Clara Tauson and Raducanu without dropping a set. Kalinskaya improved to 14-13 in the season, including 5-6 on the hard court.

I am going with Leylah Fernandez in what is shaping up to be another thrilling match in Washington D.C. Fernandez is coming into the final with massive wins over top-seeds Jessica Pegula 6-3 1-6 7-5 and Elena Rybakina 6-7(2) 7-6(3) 7-6(3). She always plays well in North American hard-court matches, but I honestly didn’t expect her to pull off this kind of run since she has never gone deep in marquee tournaments this year.
Kalinskaya has threaded a path similar to that of Fernandez. She had never had a strong season until she racked up four impressive victories in this tournament. Kalinskaya deserves a ton of credit for getting this far, but in the end, there will be only one winner. I feel Fernandez will walk onto the court more mentally ready for a tough battle after surviving battles with elite opponents. As dominant as Kalinskaya has been this week, she has yet to encounter close-game situations in this campaign, and that could put her in a predicament, especially if Fernandez continues to find success with her serves.
