Aiming to build his confidence on clay, Learner Tien of the United States sets his sight on a place in the third round of the Rome Masters against Tomas Machac of Czech Republic on Saturday.
Tien ended his three-match losing skid with a hard-earned win over countryman Reilly Opelka 6-4 7-6(11). Tien, who bombed out in the first round of his first four clay-court tournaments this year, finally got over the hump after delivering a crisp performance against the big-serving Opelka. The American double faulted six time but managed to win 81 percent of his first serves and break Opelka thrice.
After a promising first quarter of the season, Machac has gone 1-2 on clay, not able to reach the third round of both the Monte Carlo and Madrid Masters. The Czech lost to Alex De Minaur 3-6 6-0 6-3 in Monte Carlo and then absorbed another three-set defeat to Jacob Fearnley 1-6 6-3 6-2 in Madrid.
