The first round of the Rome Masters 1000 features an all-American affair between young prodigy Learner Tien and the experienced Reilly Opelka.

The revelation of the first few weeks of competition, Learner Tien is going through a more difficult period with results that have taken their toll on the young American's morale. A finalist at the Next Gen Finals and then eighth in Melbourne after qualifying, the 70th player in the world had revealed himself at the highest level at the start of the year. Present in Madrid, Reilly Opelka had reached the second round, losing to Karen Khachanov despite a fine performance. In this first round, the Michigan native will be looking to reassure herself physically against a young opponent who is also struggling.
