After returning from the long World Cup break, the San Jose Earthquakes looked unrecognizable; they haven't won any of their last four MLS matches since then, and playing at home in PayPal Park, they only managed one shot on target in their 3-1 loss to St. Louis City. Now they face LA Galaxy, against whom they drew 1-1 on July 25.
LA Galaxy have suffered essentially the same fate and haven't won in MLS since May. They also left Shell Energy Stadium without registering a single shot on target. Defender Garces, who had just come off the bench and had been on the pitch for 13 minutes, received a red card, effectively ending any chance the Californian team had of getting back into the game.
LA Galaxy won the MLS Cup in 2014, but the following year, incredibly, they finished second-to-last in the Western Conference. In 2026, after 20 matches, they sit 13th out of 15 in the standings.
