The No. 6 South Carolina Gamecocks will bring their regular season to an end today when they host the No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, SC. This battle between these two SEC titans will get underway at 2 p.m. ET with coverage via ESPN.
South Carolina is in a strange position, one that they are not accustomed to being in. After bulldozing the competition the last few years and having the SEC regular season title wrapped up, they need to win this game in order to have a shot at clinching their fourth consecutive regular season conference title. Since they lost to Texas a few weeks ago, they need a win and a Texas loss today to Florida to clinch. Of course, if they both win, they’ll be co-champs, and a coin flip will decide who’s the No. 1 seed in the conference tour.
As for Kentucky, the Wildcats know they are fighting an uphill battle, but they are a very good team in their own right. They’ve gone 5-3 against ranked opponents this season and are fresh off an 82-58 beatdown vs. No. 11 Tennessee. However, they have also lost three of their last six games (vs. No. 7 LSU, No. 3 Texas, and Ole Miss).

It is an unusual feeling, but with a pair of late-season losses to top ten teams (vs. No. 4 Texas on Feb. 9 and vs. No. 7 UConn on Feb. 16), South Carolina actually has something to prove. Yes, since the loss to Texas, they’ve won four of five games and crushed each opponent (by 38, 40, 28, and 16 points). But just winning isn’t what matters in Columbia. You have to beat the good teams. Florida, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss aren’t competing for a national championship—but teams like Texas, UConn, and, to a lesser extent, Kentucky are. That is why, and with it also being Senior Day, the Gamecocks will crush Kentucky.
