Kei Nishikori of Japan will be battling Learner Tien of the United States for a spot in the second round of the 2025 Geneva Open on Monday.
Tien’s first full-fledged foray into the European clay-court swing of the ATP Tour has been bumpy as expected. The American, who rose to prominence when he reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open earlier this year, has only won 3 out of 8 matches on the red dirt and gone as far as the second round of the 2025 Rome Masters.
Nishikori has also played 4 matches on clay this year, carrying a 2-2 record on the dirt to Geneva. The former US Open runner-up will be turning 36 in December this year, yet he remains determined to continue his professional tennis career, playing against younger and more athletic opponents on the tour.

Our Kei Nishikori vs Learner Tien Prediction
Fearless Forecast: Learner Tien defeats former top-10 player Nishikori to advance
Learner Tien will face a former perennial Grand Slam contender in Kei Nishikori in the first round of the 2025 Hamburg Open. Already a shell of his former self, Nishikori holds a 12-9 record this year, with many of his wins coming from hard-court matches. Tien, on the other hand, is still learning how to play competitive tennis on clay since this is the first time he launched a full-blown campaign during the clay-court season. Tien will enter the match with a slight edge since he has played more clay-court matches and gained some solid results despite defeats from much more experienced clay-court players like Tallon Griekspoor, Marcos Giron and Tomas Machac. Nishikori has only played 4 matches on clay this year, and I think this load management strategy has caused him to lose his form this season.
