As we gear up for what should be an exicting few weeks at the home of grass-court tennis, the smaller tournaments continue to come thick and fast. For WTA players, this week, there's action in the UK city of Nottingham, where on Tuesday, there's an interesting match between Sonay Kartal and Leolia JeanJean. This is a battle between Britain and France.
In truth, Kartal, as the higher-ranked player, must view this is as a huge opportunity to not only bounce back after that defeat to world number 13 Anisimova but to begin building momentum ahead of Wimbledon. We recently saw her beat Kasatkina on grass, which bodes well for the world number 50. Ranked at 94, Leolia JeanJean has a seemingly tough task on her hands here, and it's not as if she typically makes light work of winning grass-court matches, especially not against higher-ranked players.

She's really come on during 2025, while she's deifnitely a strong grass-court player. This is also a considerable step down from her last match in terms of opponent quality and I expect her to take full advantage of that. Having recently beaten world number 16 Kasatkina, Kartal looks a decent bet to get the job done against the world number 94, who doesn't typically thrive against higher-ranked players on this surface.
