Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia will take on Sonay Kartal of Great Britain in the first round of the ladies’ singles tournament at the 2025 Wimbledon Open championship.
Ostapenko is set to begin another Grand Slam bid at Wimbledon a few weeks after reaching the third round at Roland Garros. The former French Open winner only played two matches in her buildup at the Eastbourne Open. Ironically, Ostapenko captured her lone grass-court win this year against her first-round opponent at Wimbledon, Sonay Kartal, 6-3 7-6(2). Ostapenko faced another familiar face in Alexandra Eala in the second round. Despite taking the first set 0-6, Ostapenko would suffer her second loss to the Filipina after retiring from the match with an ankle injury. The game ended with Eala leading 0-6 6-2 3-2 ret.
As for Kartal, she finished her build-up for the Wimbledon Open with a 2-3 record, including the first-round loss to Ostapenko at the Eastbourne Open. The 23-year-old Kartal carries a career 20-16 record or 55.6 percent win rate on grass. Last year, Kartal posted five consecutive wins to reach the round-of-32 of the Wimbledon Open before falling to Coco Gauff 6-3 7-6(2).
