Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko will go up against home favorite Sonay Kartal of Great Britain in the first round of the 2025 Eastbourne Open on Tuesday.
Ostapenko is set to begin her grass-court campaign several weeks after reaching the third round of the 2025 French Open. The Latvian carries an impressive 53-24 lawn record into the new season, along with two grass-court titles in Birmingham and Eastbourne. She has also gone as deep as the semifinal of the Wimbledon Open and reached the quarterfinal of last year’s tournament at the All-England Club.
Kartal hopes to improve on a couple of second-round finishes at Queens and Nottingham in her fresh campaign at Eastbourne. Kartal is a career 20-15 on grass and had racked up five consecutive wins at the All-England Club before losing to Coco Gauff 4-6, 0-6 in the third round of the 2024 Wimbledon Open.
