by Lou Aguila in ATP Toronto Picks
Ben Shelton of the United States will shoot for his first ATP 1000-level title on Thursday, taking on Karen Khachanov of Russia in the men’s singles championship of the 2025 Canadian Open.
Shelton flies through into the final in Toronto following a decisive win over Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-3 in the semifinal. Shelton brought his A-game into his second career meeting with Fritz, firing 7 aces and collecting 25 points off the first serves to hold all his serves. Shelton also broke Fritz three times, which allowed him to seize complete control of the match. With the victory over Fritz, Shelton has eliminated four seeded opponents in the competition and earned his second consecutive win over a top-10 player.
Khachanov survived an exhausting three-set showdown with No.1 seed Alexander Zverev 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) to earn his spot in the final of the 2025 Canadian Open. Ranked No.16 in the world, Khachanov engaged in a high-drama toe-to-toe with Zverev before coming through with the big points in the tiebreaker to complete the upset against the world’s No.3. Khachanov yielded only one service break to Zverev, winning 73 percent of his first serves and scoring five aces.

Our Karen Khachanov vs Ben Shelton Prediction
Fearless Forecast: Ben Shelton wins his first ATP 1000 title with a close win over Karen Khachanov.
It won’t be easy, but Shelton will win this final matchup with Karen Khachanov, earning his first ATP 1000 title on Thursday. Shelton has been on fire in this tourney, beating several heavyweights on his way to the championship match. His dominant win over two top-10 opponents - Alex De Minaur and Taylor Fritz - should boost his confidence ahead of the most important game of his career. Shelton will also step onto the court battle-tested after surviving a couple of grueling matches against Brandon Nakashima and Flavio Cobolli in the preliminary rounds.
Khachanov will also enter Thursday’s battle brimming with confidence following his upset win over Zverev. However, with only a little time to prepare, Khachanov must tap into whatever is left in his tank in his match with a fresher Ben Shelton, roughly 24 hours after his tiring match with Zverev.
I believe Khachanov has all the tools to win a big title like the Canadian Open. After all, he already won an ATP 1000 title in 2018 when he upset Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters. The question now is whether he can engage in another physically demanding match with Shelton and grind out a win. I don’t think he will have the stamina to gut out another win, especially if this match heads into a decider. Moreover, Khachanov is still winless against Shelton, having lost to the American in their first matchup in the third round of the 2025 Indian Wells Open, 6-3 7-5.
Our betting prediction for Karen Khachanov vs. Ben Shelton: Ben Shelton will cover -1.5 Games.
