The second round of the women’s March Madness Tournament rolls on today, with the No. 5 seed Kansas State Wildcats facing the No. 4 seed Kentucky Wildcats. This Big 12-SEC battle is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. ET with coverage via ESPN.
Kansas State had a relatively easy game in the first round vs. the Fairfield Stags, winning 85-41. The game got out of hand when the Wildcats outscored the Stags 29-6 in the third quarter, pushing K-State’s lead from 12 at the break to 35 going into the final period. Serena Sundell led the way with 18 points and nine assists, followed by Ayoka Lee with a double-double, 17 points, and ten rebounds. Kentucky didn’t have it nearly as easy vs. the No. 13 seed Liberty Flames in their first-round matchup. They appeared to be in control after three quarters as they took a 14-point advantage into the fourth quarter (64-50). But then they went ice cold from the floor, making just four of 16 shots while Liberty went 8-14. The Flames got within a point late in the game but couldn’t take the lead. Georgia Amoore led the way for the Wildcats with 34 points, eight assists, and two rebounds.
I was leaning toward Kansas State -2.5. Neither team looked great down the stretch, and while both won in the first round, Kansas State played so well there was no doubt as to how their opener was going to go. Kentucky, on the other hand, lost control in the fourth and nearly lost the game. but then I noticed the game is taking place on Kentucky’s home court.
Homecourt advantage could give Kentucky the edge it needs to pull out the win.
