The Kansas City Royals (74-58 SU, 74-58 ATS) face the Cleveland Guardians (75-57 SU, 65-67 ATS) with a chance to move into first place in the AL Central. The Guardians have led the division most of the way on the back of a strong start to the year, but they’re struggling to hold off the Royals. Kansas City has shaved the division lead to a single game, in part because the Royals have dominated the division all year long.
Kansas City owns a 28-13 record against the AL Central, and that has not been exclusive to beating up on the Tigers and White Sox. The Royals are 6-2 against the Guardians this year, including sweeping the first two games of this series. Cleveland, on the other hand, keeps losing opportunities inside the division. If the Guardians can’t get their momentum back, what started as dominance could end with Cleveland having to go through the wild card round.

Cleveland is running out of time to hold on, and this pitching matchup really doesn’t help. Michael Lorenzen has put together three strong showings since coming to Kansas City, with the bullpen being the main reason that he only has one win so far in blue. Lorenzen is in the midst of his best season since 2019, and his ERA as a Royal is just 1.99.
Gavin Williams has been roughed up pretty well in August. He came up big against Minnesota when the Guardians needed a win over a division rival, but he allowed a combined 14 runs in 12.1 innings in his other three starts, all defeats. He has faced nothing but playoff teams in August, but that’s the nature of the schedule when getting to this point. Cleveland’s August has been loaded, and it’s looking like the Guardians might not be able to handle it. Our prediction for Kansas City vs. Cleveland is for the Royals to win.
