João Fonseca of Brazil will attempt to punch his ticket to the third round of the French Open against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Thursday.
Fonseca recorded his first victory at Roland Garros, sweeping Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 6-2 6-4 6-2 in the first round. The 18-year-old prodigy from Brazil overpowered the Pole from start to finish, as he racked 40 first-serve points and drilled 9 aces without conceding a service break. Fonseca is making his French Open debut and playing his second Grand Slam after also playing at the Australian Open, where he reached the second round.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert booked his spot in the second round after edging Benjamin Bonzi in a five-set showdown, 7-5 3-6 4-6 7-5 6-2. Ranked 147th in the world, Hugues-Herbert climbed from a 1-2 set hole by coming out on top of every significant rally in the fourth and five sets. Hugues-Herbert is a wild card entry in this year’s Roland Garros.
