Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia will attempt to gather herself up following an unexpected second-round exit at Madrid. The enigmatic WTA star will play Rebecca Sramkova in the second round of the 2025 Italian Open on Thursday.
After amazing run in Stuttgart highlighted by wins over world’s No.2 Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals and world’s No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the championship match, things went south quickly for Ostapenko as she dropped her second-round match against compatriot Anastasija Sevastova 7-6(2) 6-2. The shocking loss after a triumphant campaign perfectly encapsulates the volatility of Ostapenko’s career ever since her breakthrough run at the 2017 French Open.
Meanwhile, Sramkova arranged a date with Ostapenko after zooming past McCarthy Kessler of the United States 6-3 6-3. The result ended the two-match losing streak for the Slovakian. More importantly, it gives her a chance to go deep in Rome, which offers plenty of ranking points being WTA-1000 level event.
