Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia will take on Laura Siegemund of Germany in the third round of the 2025 Italian Open on Saturday.
Ostapenko, the 2025 Stuttgart Open champion, averted another early-round disaster after she rallied from a set down to beat Rebecca Sramkova 1-6 6-4 6-3 on Thursday. Ostapenko ensured she would not fall into the same trap as she did in Madrid, where she was stunned by countrywoman Anastasija Sevastova 7-6(2) 6-2 in the 2nd round. The former French Open champion pulled off the comeback by winning most of 29 first-serve points and 49 return points between the second and third sets.
Meanwhile, Siegemund entered the third round after beating Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. Despite being a lucky loser participant, Siegement was awarded a bye into the second round and capitalized on her second chance. Siegemund, who reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2020, has a 64 percent win rate on clay.
