by Bradley Gibbs in AFCON Picks
The nation that has won this prestigious prize not once but twice since 2015 will get down to business for the first time in the knockouts on Tuesday. Standing in the way of the Ivory Coast and a place in the quarter finals is a team that has twice made the semi finals since 2017.
When they lost narrowly to the Algerians during the second round of group games, the Burkina Faso boys could’ve lost confidence, but they remained hopeful and delivered a strong display against Sudan, winning by two goals to zero, flying through to the knockouts with a heathy six points to their name. Considered as the underdogs here, Brama Traore’s men may just fancy themselves to upset an Ivory Coast team that wasn’t exactly impossible to get at during the group stages.

Côte d'Ivoire - Burkina Faso: Form Analysis
Beating Mozambique first time out was always likely to be something that the Ivory Coast players were capable of achieving, and achieve the win they did, grinding it out by a goal to zero. Next time out, they couldn’t quite get over the line against Cameroon, though a 1-1 tie was far from the worst result. During the final round of group games, the Elephants didn’t cover themselves in defensive glory, conceding twice against Gabon, but they had the offensive quality to get it done, scoring twice late on through Evan Guessand and Bazoumana Toure.
Can they now kick on and hurt an Ivory Coast team that is fancied by the early market? They just might
Offensively strong is a sufficient way to describe the Stallions too. Scoring twice late on during the first round of group games, the Burkina Faso boys came from behind to beat Equatorial Guinea having created lots throughout the contest. They couldn’t do enough to score against a strong Algeria team but they still created plenty and were far from battered, before shifting through the gears to beat Sudan with plenty to spare last time out. Can they now kick on and hurt an Ivory Coast team that is fancied by the early market? They just might.

Côte d'Ivoire & Burkina Faso Squad Analysis
Forward Sebastien Haller hasn't featured yet at this tournament, and as the Utrecht forward continues to nurse a hamstring issue, he’s unlikely to play against Burkina Faso. Haller is not the only Ivory Coast forward carrying a knock. Vakoun Bayo played against Cameroon but missed out last time with a knee injury. He too is unlikely to play in Marrakech.
If the first-choice keeper is not fit enough, 22-year-old Kilian Nikiema is expected to deputise.
Burkina Faso head coach Brama Traore may be without Herve Koffi, who started all three group games, but was forced off early against Sudan last time out. If the first-choice keeper is not fit enough, 22-year-old Kilian Nikiema is expected to deputise. Freiburg forward Cyriaque Irie is also an injury doubt.

Our Côte d'Ivoire vs Burkina Faso Prediction
As these two teams clash, I really like the look of 'Both Teams to Score' all the time odds of +120 are available. We know that the Elephants have lots of offensive quality, and it would be a sizable surprise if they failed to find the net, but have they got the defensive quality to keep things tight? Probably not.
After all, the Stallions know how to hit teams on the break, while they too have some accomplished forwards. Even when they didn't score against Algeria in the groups, they created plenty too.
