Inter Miami won the League Cup in 2023; the Florida club has consistently been a contender in the competition that brings together Liga MX and MLS clubs. Led by Messi, they were finalists in the previous edition and won the title in 2023. In this year's edition, they started strong, defeating Atlético San Luis 4-2.
At Nu Stadium, Inter Miami displayed a highly effective attack. San Luis scored an early and unwelcome goal in the 4th minute, but they staged a decisive comeback: before halftime, they were already winning 4-1, with two goals from Messi. Noah Allen assisted on the first three goals for the Herons, while Messi assisted Micael on the final goal.
Monterrey, meanwhile, suffered a major blow to their hopes of advancing to the next round; they lost 1-2 to Orlando City. The disallowed early goal was highly controversial. VAR intervened and ultimately disallowed the goal for offside. Olrnaod was also awarded a questionable penalty; whatever the controversy, Monterrey played an excellent opening few minutes, but their performance faded. In the end, five players received yellow cards, and the Belgian Cuypers' goal was merely a consolation prize with the game practically decided.
