If there's a clutch player for the Yankees, it's Stanton, and thanks to him, at least for now, the Yankees have avoided further decline in the standings. Stanton went 1-for-2 with two walks, and his hit was a decisive, two-run RBI hit as the Yankees won Game 2 5-4 in the Bronx against the Astros, after losing Game 1 3-5. That loss again brought furious criticism to manager Aaron Boone for his decision to bring in Williams again at a crucial moment in the game; he allowed a home run by Trammell on Friday, inflicting a costly loss on the Yankees.
Games 1 and 2 were close in both the development and betting odds, but the Yankees were left with a favorable pitching matchup for the series finale, featuring left-hander Max Fried. Fried was almost guaranteed a win at the start of the season, but the Yankees lost three games in July and August, with Fried starting as the betting favorite.
For their part, the Astros, with the addition of Correa again, once again look like a team destined to contend for the World Series this year. Correa has hit more since joining the Astros than he had been doing with the Twins; the Puerto Rican went 2-for-3 in Saturday's loss, and Altuve hit before him, going 2-for-4.
